Winter is finally over (we think) and April showers have arrived. While it can sometimes be cold and dreary outside this month, the promise of warmer days is just a few short weeks away. In the meantime, you can take your mind off the weather with our April picks of the month, including a Czech lager, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Amaro liqueur.
April Beer, Wine, and Liquor of the Month
The RSVP Beer of the Month is Bunker Brewing’s All Things Must Pass. Not to be confused with Gandalf’s favorite beer, You Shall Not Pass, this 5.4% Czech Lager is mashed with a base of Moravian Pilsner malt, plus a dash of Munich. Brewed in collaboration with West Kill Brewing out of Kingston, New York, All Things Must Pass was hopped with CZ Harmonie in the kettle, fermented low and slow, and then laid down long and cold for four weeks. 4-packs of 16 oz cans are available for $13.99.
April’s wine special is Hook or Crook Cellars’ 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This California wine has notes of black cherry, black currant, blackberry, black pepper, tobacco and vanilla. Wine Enthusiast rated it 91 points, raving that the “Indulgent ripeness of flavor and richness of texture makes this deep-colored wine stand out.” Priced at only $9.99, you’ll definitely want to pick up more than one bottle.
Bully Boy Distillers Amaro is our liquor of the month, and available for 24.99 per bottle. This riff on the classic Italian bitter liqueur is distilled from a combination of more than 26 different botanicals. The bitter backbone comes from a combination of hops, including Amarillo, Cascade, Citra, and Galaxy. It’s complimented by a pop of grapefruit, and is rounded out by earthy and floral notes, including yarrow, rhubarb root, and fig. At 58 proof it’s soft enough to sip neat, but robust enough to use in cocktails, like our featured recipe below.
The Paper Plane
With equal proportions of only four ingredients, the Paper Plane is an easy, straightforward cocktail to whip up. But don’t be fooled by the simplicity. This bourbon cocktail offers a bright, fresh, and complex flavor profile.
Ingredients:
- 3/4 oz Bourbon
- 3/4 oz Amaro
- 3/4 oz Aperol
- 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. And the remaining ingredients, shake well, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, sip, and enjoy.
